Chapter 17

Aria

My heart is thumping madly, and I know my face is probably ashen, but I'm actually not having a panic attack for a change. I'm not sure if it's being surrounded by my friends, or if it's Leo's comforting hold that is keeping me together. The feel of his arms surrounding me, the smell of his aftershave and the sound of his hushed murmurs in my ear, are enabling me to stay present and deal with this next round of 'fucked-up cousin Zeke.' We are all gathered around the front of the building when Reid and Raff come storming up. Raff looks ready to hurt someone, while Reid looks panicked. Strange to see that look on someone else for a change.

Reid pulls me from Leo's arms and crushes me against him, stroking my hair. I can feel his heart hammering away inside his chest and have a selfish moment thinking about the fact that I caused this reaction in him. He is concerned for me. "Are you okay?" he asks me, pulling back slightly to look in my eyes.

I manage a quick nod.

Raff stands by us and plants a tender kiss on the side of my head before barking out, "What's going on?"

Before anyone has had a chance to open their mouth to reply, he has stalked over to the door and growled out at the sight of the flowers. The fact that that noise makes my underwear suddenly wet makes me consider my sanity. Should I really be getting horny at a time like this?

Reid grasps my hand and we enter the small lobby. "Stay with Austin and Leo, love. Raff and I will go ahead and see if the coast is clear." He grabs keys from Sarah and we all watch as they head up the stairs.

The two professors close ranks around me and Sarah, who is still swearing under her breath. I didn't miss the curious, and if I read it right, jealous glances from either of them at the way Reid and Raff were with me just now. I guess they hadn't heard about the latest closet fun times, which is certainly a relief.

As we are quietly and anxiously waiting for any news, Gemma and Matt enter. Taking us all in, the drawn looks on our faces, Gemma says, "What has happened? Was it Zeke?" She answers her own question once she gets a look behind us at the roses. "Jesus!"

"Why are you all standing here? Shouldn't we go up, see if everything is alright?" asks Matt.

"Reid and Raff are up there now. We'll go when it's safe," replies Austin.

"You think he's still up there?" whispers out a suddenly nervous Gemma. I hate that my bullshit is upsetting her now that she's getting her life sorted and gaining confidence.

"I doubt he was here at all. He's sent someone to do this, knowing you had class this morning," says Leo.

A couple from the floor above us come down the stairs, casting curious glances at the roses and then at us.
